The Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Olushola Alao, has come out in strong defense of Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, describing him as a patriotic son of Yorubaland who doesn’t deserve to be labeled a criminal. The monarch is now calling on the Federal Government to grant Igboho clemency, citing his contributions to the region’s security efforts.

During Igboho’s visit to his palace in Orile Igbon, Oyo State, Oba Alao praised the activist for standing against insecurity and violent herdsmen in the South-West. According to the monarch, Igboho’s efforts have been invaluable in promoting peace and stability in the region. “Sunday Igboho is not a criminal. I am appealing to the Federal Government of Nigeria through our dear President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to forgive and have mercy on him,” the Olugbon stated.

Oba Alao emphasized that Igboho’s prolonged stay abroad is unnecessary and that his skills and expertise would be better utilized back home. “Enough of his stay abroad; we need him back home to continue his mission — but let his actions be guided by the law,” the monarch added. This statement underscores the Olugbon’s conviction that Igboho’s intentions are pure and that his return would be beneficial to the community.

The Olugbon disclosed plans to formally write the Federal Government and the South-West Governors’ Forum within 48 hours to seek a full pardon for Igboho. This move is part of a broader effort to rally support for Igboho’s reintegration into society. Oba Alao also intends to consult other prominent traditional rulers and South-West leaders, including the Alaafin of Oyo, to amplify the call for clemency.

According to Oba Alao, Igboho’s return would strengthen community-led security initiatives in the face of rising threats. The monarch believes that Igboho’s experience and knowledge would be invaluable assets in promoting peace and security in Yorubaland. By endorsing Igboho’s efforts, the Olugbon is effectively lending his support to community-led security initiatives.

Igboho, who was warmly received by the monarch and his wife, Olori Olusola Alao, expressed gratitude for the royal support he received during his legal ordeals. He specifically thanked the Olugbon for his role in securing his release from detention abroad. “Baba was one of the few monarchs who voluntarily signed the documents that helped secure my release. When I needed to bury my mother, he used his influence to ensure I could return home safely. I do not take his love and support for granted,” Igboho said.

The activist’s heartfelt words underscore the significance of the Olugbon’s support in his life. Igboho’s appreciation for the monarch’s efforts demonstrates the importance of traditional leaders in promoting peace and stability in their communities.

In his plea to President Tinubu, Igboho appealed for the removal of his name from the list of wanted persons. He also urged the President to focus more on protecting Yorubaland from further security threats. This appeal highlights Igboho’s commitment to the security and well-being of his people.

Igboho’s visit to the Olugbon’s palace and the monarch’s subsequent call for clemency have sparked a renewed debate about the role of community leaders in promoting peace and security. As the Federal Government considers the Olugbon’s plea, it remains to be seen how Igboho’s case will unfold.

The development has been welcomed by many in Yorubaland, who see Igboho as a champion of their rights and interests. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the Olugbon’s endorsement of Igboho has brought renewed attention to the activist’s plight and the broader issues of security and community leadership in Yorubaland.
