In a significant move aimed at revitalizing the Nigeria Police Force’s internal structure, the Inspector-General of Police has approved the promotion of over 33,000 officers. This batch includes more than 29,000 rank-and-file officers and 4,708 Inspectors, marking one of the most extensive internal reorganizations in recent years.

The mass promotion comes against the backdrop of growing public concern over the welfare of police officers. Months of internal agitation and public campaigns, notably the #PoliceProtest, highlighted the years of neglect faced by junior officers, bringing attention to the need for improved welfare structures within the Force.

According to internal documents and wireless signals obtained by SaharaReporters, the promotions span across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). A circular titled “RANK-AND-FILE PROMOTION GENERAL 2025” outlines the details of the promotion, which sees 29,137 junior officers elevated to new ranks in line with traditional non-commissioned officer career progression.

The promotions cover various ranks, including Police Constables to Corporals, Corporals to Sergeants, and Sergeants to Inspectors, which form the bedrock of operational policing in Nigeria. This development is expected to boost morale and enhance the overall effectiveness of the Force.

The circular, issued by police authorities, specifies that the promotions take effect from April 3, 2024, and July 14, 2025, as indicated against the officers’ names. With this mass promotion, the Nigeria Police Force demonstrates its commitment to recognizing and rewarding the dedication and hard work of its officers.

This move is likely to have a positive impact on the Force’s operational efficiency and morale, coming at a time when the police are under scrutiny for their welfare structure. The promotion of over 33,000 officers is a testament to the Force’s efforts to address the concerns of its personnel and improve overall performance.

The Nigeria Police Force’s decision to promote thousands of its officers is a step in the right direction, aimed at enhancing the welfare and career progression of its personnel. As the Force continues to navigate the complexities of modern policing, such initiatives are crucial in maintaining the trust and confidence of its officers.

By approving these promotions, the Inspector-General of Police has sent a strong message about the importance of recognizing and rewarding the hard work and dedication of police officers. This development is expected to have far-reaching implications for the Force’s overall performance and morale, ultimately contributing to improved safety and security for the Nigerian people.
