Egbeda LG Chairman, Sikiru Sanda, Highlights The Importance Of Hand Hygiene On Global Handwashing Day

In a remarkable display of unity and commitment to public health, millions of people around the world came together on October 15 to celebrate Global Handwashing Day. This year’s campaign, themed “Be a Handwashing Hero,” was proudly supported by the Egbeda Local Government in partnership with UNICEF. The event serves as a poignant reminder that washing our hands with soap is a simple yet powerful way to prevent the spread of germs and protect lives.

The Executive Chairman of Egbeda Local Government, Hon. Sanda Sikiru, represented by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Oladebo, officially flagged off the campaign. In his remarks, Hon. Oladebo emphasized the importance of maintaining clean hands, stating that it is a crucial aspect of personal hygiene and a key factor in preventing the spread of diseases.

The Director of Environmental Health Services, Sanitarian Baale Victoria Adekunbi, took the lead in promoting good hygiene practices and raising awareness on the importance of handwashing. Through a practical demonstration, she showed participants the proper handwashing technique, highlighting its significance in preventing the spread of diseases.

In a show of solidarity, Mrs. Ajao Nafisat Temitope joined the campaign as an ambassador, educating market women at Gbagi Market on the importance of handwashing as an act that promotes personal well-being and protects families and the larger community from infectious diseases.

The campaign was well-attended by dignitaries from the Egbeda Local Government, including Leader of the Legislative Arm, Hon. Olakanmi Olusola; Hon. Rafiu Ibrahim; Hon. Sarafadeen Salaudeen; Hon. Jimoh Arowolo; Supervisor for Health, Hon. Ayaniyi; youth leader, Ajorosun LCDA, Alhaji Ganiyu Babatunde; Director of Education, Mrs. Bosede Ilugbaro; and Director of Budget, Mr. Abiola Adebayo. Market women and teachers also participated in large numbers, underscoring the importance of this public health initiative.

The campaign traversed various parts of Egbeda Local Government, including Efun, Gbagi International Market, and the Akingbade area, spreading the message of handwashing as a lifesaving habit. Participants were encouraged to make handwashing a regular practice, not just on special days, but every day.
