Oyo NUJ Chairman, Akeem Abas, Emphasizes Need For Press Freedom And Professionalism

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has extended New Year greetings to its members, patrons and partners, expressing optimism for renewed hope, fresh opportunities and stronger commitment to professionalism, unity and service to society in the year ahead.

In a New Year message jointly signed by the Chairman, Comrade Akeem Abas, and the Secretary, Temidayo Adu, the Council reflected on the outgoing year, noting that it was marked by both challenges and notable achievements within the media sector.

The leadership commended journalists in the state for their resilience, dedication and unwavering commitment to ethical journalism, despite the evolving media landscape and prevailing socio-economic pressures confronting the profession.

According to the statement, the Council emphasized that journalists would face even greater responsibilities in the New Year, particularly as agenda setters and watchdogs of society, stressing the need to promote responsible journalism, deepen public trust and defend press freedom while adhering to professional standards.

The NUJ, Oyo State Council, also expressed appreciation to its patrons and partners for their consistent support, collaboration and confidence, noting that such contributions have continued to strengthen the Union’s capacity to advance media development and societal progress.

The Council promised to prioritize improved welfare for members, stronger institutional partnerships and enhanced capacity-building initiatives, while wishing all members, patrons and partners a peaceful, prosperous and fulfilling New Year.
