The Rivers State House of Assembly has taken a significant step towards initiating impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, citing alleged constitutional and administrative issues. This move, initiated during a plenary session, has escalated political tensions in the oil-rich Niger Delta State.

The Assembly’s decision comes amidst a power struggle between Governor Fubara and former Governor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, creating uncertainties and anxieties in the state. The lawmakers have accused Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, of gross misconduct, including non-presentation of the budget, unauthorized spending, and obstruction of the Assembly’s constitutional duties.

The notice of allegations, signed by 26 lawmakers, will be served to Fubara within seven days, as required by law. This development is seen as a new phase in the state’s deepening political crisis, with implications for the 2027 elections.

The impeachment proceedings are part of an ongoing power struggle between Fubara and Wike, with the two leaders having switched parties, Fubara joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Wike remaining in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
