Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, representing Oyo South Senatorial District, has expressed confidence that Ibadan will secure statehood as soon as Nigeria resumes creating new states. Appearing on a radio program in Ibadan, Senator Alli emphasized that the city meets all key criteria for state creation, including population, landmass, infrastructure, and viability.

The senator highlighted the long-standing agitation for Ibadan State, which has gained momentum amid broader calls for restructuring Nigeria’s 36-state federation. Elevating Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital and one of Nigeria’s largest cities with over 3 million residents, would unlock economic potential and address administrative bottlenecks, Alli noted.

“The clamour for Ibadan State has persisted for years, with many Ibadan indigenes actively pushing for it,” Senator Alli said. He recalled that during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Ibadan for the coronation of the new Olubadan, His Imperial Majesty Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa I, raised the issue directly with the President. “I can assure you that when new states are created, Ibadan will be top on the list,” Senator Alli added.

Senator Sharafadeen Alli also defended the recently approved tax reforms, insisting they benefit ordinary Nigerians. The new tax regime simplifies compliance, broadens the base without overburdening the poor, and boosts revenue for critical infrastructure and social services, he explained.

The senator’s assurance has sparked hope among Ibadan residents, who have long advocated for statehood. With Nigeria’s fiscal challenges, the tax reforms aim to replace outdated levies with a more efficient system.

As a seasoned politician, Senator Sharafadeen Alli has been actively involved in public service and community development. He currently represents Oyo South Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly and serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters.

Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli’s vision for Ibadan’s future is clear: he believes the city has everything it takes to become a state and is committed to making it happen.
