As the tenure of Seyi Makinde gradually winds down in Oyo State, political conversations are growing louder. Reports and political signals suggest that the governor may be preparing to endorse a preferred candidate ahead of the next election.
Endorsement in itself is not a crime. It is a political right. But the deeper question on the minds of many citizens is this:
Will endorsement turn into control?
Across Nigeria, we have witnessed situations where outgoing leaders struggle to release power completely. The unfolding political tension in Rivers State between former governor Nyesom Wike and his successor Siminalayi Fubara has become a national reference point. What began as political alignment evolved into a power tussle that affected governance, stability, and public confidence.

Oyo State must not walk that path.
Endorsement vs. Imposition
There is a clear difference between:
Supporting a candidate, and
Attempting to dictate governance after leaving office.
Democracy allows endorsement.
Democracy does not allow remote control governance.

The people of Oyo deserve a governor who will be accountable to them — not to political arrangements behind closed doors.
A Question for Governor Makinde
Governor Makinde has built a reputation for strategic leadership and political calculation. As he approaches the end of his administration, his greatest legacy may not be roads, schools, or projects — but the political culture he leaves behind.
Will he:
Allow a truly competitive and transparent selection process?
Permit his successor to govern independently?
Resist the temptation to influence decisions from outside office?
The true strength of leadership is shown in the ability to step aside completely.
A Message to the People of Oyo State
The future of Oyo State does not rest solely in the hands of political actors. Citizens must insist on:
Independent institutions
Transparent primaries and elections
Accountability to the electorate, not to individuals
Political godfatherism weakens governance because it divides loyalty. A governor should serve the people — not manage political debts.
Let Oyo Lead by Example
The situation in Rivers State has shown how quickly political alliances can become political crises. Oyo State has an opportunity to model something different — a smooth, dignified transition built on trust and independence.
History will remember this season.
The question is simple but powerful:
Will Governor Seyi Makinde release power completely, or attempt to shape governance from behind the scenes?
Oyo deserves stability.
Oyo deserves independence.
Oyo deserves leadership accountable only to the people.
